Rewrite only the flagged continuous prose

Charles Li · HumanPen · only-flagged-continuous-prose

Once the Turnitin or iThenticate AI writing report is imported, the productive scope is: rewrite only the flagged continuous-prose spans. Dense body paragraphs the model highlighted—not every caption, not every short transition, and not a whole-document wash because it feels thorough.

Distinct from flagged-passages-first (order among flagged spans), leave-unflagged-prose-alone (what to leave), and dont-wash-whole-document (anti-pattern). Here the literacy move is scope: continuous prose the report actually painted.

Better order

  1. Import the full AI writing report; confirm attempt identity; read the legend once.
  2. Map highlighted continuous-prose blocks; ignore lists/tables unless the report truly painted them as continuous prose.
  3. Rewrite those mapped spans only—usually methods/results/discussion body.
  4. Freeze citations, numbers, formulas, tables, and page layout on every edit.
  5. Re-import after a pass only for spans that are still flagged—not to reopen clean prose.

Why “touch everything” wastes a pass

International students sometimes rewrite every paragraph so the file “feels safer.” Detectors score qualifying continuous prose. Changing unflagged lines can introduce new flags, burn rewrite words, and scramble layout without addressing what the report pointed at.
