Match the report span to the prose you rewrite

Highlight maps are easy to misread by a sentence. The literacy move here is match the report span to the prose you rewrite—edit the painted continuous-prose unit, not a convenient neighbor.

Distinct from flagged-passages-first (priority order), only-flagged-continuous-prose (scope), and leave-unflagged-prose-alone (protect neighbors). Here the point is alignment between highlight and edit.

Better order

  1. Import the full AI writing report; confirm attempt identity; read the legend once.
  2. Open the draft beside the report; locate the exact continuous-prose span that was painted.
  3. Rewrite that span in place; do not “fix” by editing the paragraph above or below.
  4. Freeze citations, numbers, formulas, tables, and layout on every edit.
  5. Re-export and re-import a fresh report before the next round.

Why span match matters

Misaligned edits change text the report never flagged and leave the flagged unit untouched. Supervisors comparing the report PDF to the revised draft then see noise instead of a clean before/after on the painted span.
